The Hillside Club
2286 Cedar Street

featuring keynote speaker
Jose Padilla,
Executive Director of the California Rural Legal Assistance,
and guest of honor,
the
Honorable Cruz Reynoso,
former Assistant Justice, California Supreme Court,
and
Boochever and Bird Chair for the Study and Teaching of Freedom and
Equality,
at the U.C. Davis School of Law (King Hall).
Thanks to the vision and generosity of our alumnae/i
and other supporters, La Raza Law Students Association is realizing
the decade-old dream of creating a sustainable fellowship to support
Latina/o students' aspirations to practice social justice lawyering.
With your help, in the first year of fundraising we
raised over $40,000 in pledges and held a delightful dinner at the
law school. The next year, in 2004, the pledged money and further
fundraising totaled $52,000. The Honorable Cruz Reynoso presented
the first Reynoso Fellowship to Patricia Salazar, who worked that
summer for Neighborhood Legal Services in Los Angeles--focusing
on labor rights for low income Latina/o workers.
The Cruz Reynoso Social Justice Fellowship funds Latina/o
students who choose to engage public interest work as a summer intern.
After reaching our initial endowment goal of $60,000, we plan to
move into the next phase of fundraising. With the support of our
community of alumnae/i and other allies, we plan to evolve the fellowship
into a full scholarship that will defray the costs of tuition and
fund public interest work as a summer intern. Our long term vision
is to build a fund that rivals the Skadden and Equal Justice Works
Fellowships.
