We express our heart-felt gratitude
to the
Honorable Cruz Reynoso for entrusting his legacy with
La Raza Law Students Association.
Friday, May 7th, 2004
Law Offices of Duran, Ochoa & Icaza, LLP
1035 Carleton Street
Berkeley CA 94710
Thanks to your support, La Raza Law Students Association
awarded the first Cruz Reynoso Social Justice Fellowship
to Ms. Patricia Salazar, who will work this summer to serve
the Latina/o community in Los Angeles.
The evening began with mariachi welcoming attendees.
People then began to sit, and dinner was served. Cristal Torres
de Herrera, Co-Chairperson de La Raza Law Students Association
then described the vision behind the Fellowship and introduced this
year's keynote speaker, Maria Blanco, executive director
of the Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights for the San Francisco
Bay Area. Ms. Blanco delivered a stirring keynote address
that featured the statistical reality of Latina/o education in California.
The Honorable Cruz Reynoso then spoke. Justice
Reynoso shared his vision of community service and challenged all
present to ensure that such service transcends the delivery of legal
services and manifests true engagement with the people and organizations
that form our communities. The night ended with a grito, led by
Alex Zuñíga, past Treasurer of the Association.
Afterwards, students and friends caroused at a local pub in Berkeley.
Gracias a todos who joined
us and to those who could not attend but whose support made the
evening possible! Be sure to plan to attend next year's celebration!
