One of the most compelling ideas that has come
out of our dialogue with Raza alumni is working to fund a
fellowship. This would allow La Raza Law Students Association
to institutionalize the progressive nature of the association
and reflect the values that have prevented many Raza alumni
from supporting Boalt in the past. The mission statement of
the fellowship is personified in both its emblems content
and character. The fact that the emblem comes from a mural
on a wall in the former association office symbolizes the
fellowship as a continuation of the associations institutionalized
commitment to social justice, and its statement justicia
para el pobre (justice for the poor) captures the spirit
of the type of legal work the fellowship seeks to reward.
Our goal is to award the first fellowship in the summer of
2004 and each summer thereafter to the student whose summer
project and record of service show the strongest potential
to positively impact underserved Latina/o communities.
