Teach-In

The Coalition for Diversity Teach-In is a means of preserving the institutional memory of the struggle for diversity at Boalt Hall. This year's event was well attended by both incoming and returning students who were treated to an awesome panel of speakers.
The speakers covered wide ranging ground, from the history of diversity at Boalt to diversity in our communities and even drawing a connection between the ultra-localized efforts to promote diversity at Boalt and the need for an appreciation of diversity in understanding the events of and reactions to September 11, 2001.

Food for your mind

Diversity-Day 2001

Law school is about communicating and understanding different arguments and perspectives. However, students often get so indoctrinated by old white male lecturers, panel speakers, law review articles, and formal judicial opinions, that the law school education leaves out nontraditional methods of communication and expression.

D-DAY was Boalt Hall's celebration of diversity.  On April 19, 2001, various bay area artists and performers collaborated to remind the Berkeley community that debate about politics and the law does not always take place in a lecture hall.  Rico from Prophets of Rage exposed the hypocrisy of the US government's colonization of Puerto Rico.  Deities Elevatin and Teach in Humans (D.E.A.T.H.) Organization used their lyrics to explore social problems such as racism and stereotyping. The Borrero Congueros brought us back to the basis of all musical and verbal expression: rhythm. DJ Croix and DJ J.C. reminded us that the best music, like the best intellectual ideas, come from mixing influences of different cultures and styles.
Over 200 students and members of the Berkeley community joined in celebrating the diversity that still exists at Boalt Hall despite the setback of the passage of proposition 209 in 1997.  The community of students of color may be small at Boalt, but the mighty size and spirit of the supporters of diversity was demonstrated by the vast support and celebration of diversity at D-DAY 2001.
D-DAY was made possible by the generous financial support of the UC Berkeley Graduate Assembly, The Boalt Hall Office of Student Services, and The Boalt
Hall Coalition for Diversity, as well as APALSA, LSAD, NALSA, La Raza, BWLJ, BLF, Stop DV and the LGBT Caucus.
